Why Sing at MIT?
Academic life at MIT is unavoidably hectic. In the midst of problem sets and exams, a cappella singing is a much-needed mental break as well as a creative outlet. For people who love singing, performing, or arranging music, an a cappella group like the Logs has proven to be a central pillar of many students’ lives on campus.
Like most MIT groups, the Logs rehearse for 6 hours a week, spread out over 3 rehearsals. This schedule leaves plenty of space for academic and other commitments, while also allowing the group to pursue a high standard of musical excellence.
why the logs?
The Logs are the oldest acapella group at MIT, standing the test of time because of our tight-knit community and musical excellence.
Our community, made up of both the active group members and over 70 years of Logs alumni, is built to last our entire lives. While at MIT, Logs bond during our weekly gigs, performing at MIT events, nearby colleges, local schools, businesses, weddings, and a cappella showcases. When we’re not singing, we’re traveling on retreats and tours all over, including London, San Francisco, New York City, and Texas.
The Logs regularly record and release music from our very own in-house recording studio. In the last 20 years, we have been featured in the Best of Collegiate Acapella (BOCA) album six times, been featured in the Voices Only album four times, been nominated for nine awards from the Contemporary Acapella Recording Awards, and won three of those awards including Best Song, Best Arrangement, and Best Solo. how do i join?
We hold auditions once a year in the fall during Orientation before classes begin.
To audition, you will need:
10 minutes of free time
A single verse and chorus of any song, and
A joke!
What you do not need to audition is any prior musical experience. The active Logs vary in musicianship from music-theory experts and instrumental geniuses to shower singers and “Logs is my first time singing!”-ers. You never really know until you try out!
